Hacker attacks on Presidential elections

Information security assurance during voting is one of the most critical tasks while conducting elections of President of the Russian Federation, the head of the Central Electoral Committee of the Russian Federation, Alexander Veshnyakov announced.

It is necessary to show some more openness at bringing results of voting, efficiency and also the main is assurance of voting security, the head of Committee noted, according to Russian Information Agency «Novosti». Veshnyakov also explained that during December parliament elections about 900 attacks were detected on website devoted to election. These attacks, according to Veshnyakov, were performed not only by amateur hackers but also by foreign countries and organizations. New software for «State Automated System - Elections» («SAS-Elections») was tested and installed in 2003, Veshnyakov reminded.
"We created a data base allowing to combine information on most Russian regions", he said. Besides 16 channels of satellite communication were installed covering all Russian territory, he noted. In the framework of «SAS-Elections» more than 1 thousand of new computers and 7 thousand of servers were installed. It allowed to increase volumes of transferred information by 30 times and rate of data transmission by 45 times.
