They're talking about programmers being able to extend and use their own customisations on the map services hosted by Yahoo! and Google.
Nothing to do with regular search engine functions.

What does the following mean..."On Wednesday, Google opened a set of programming interfaces for its popular Google Maps service, in the hope hackers will overlay the maps with data from outside sources -- such as wireless cafes" Does this mean the hackers are going to do whatever they want or is it meant to provide a means for all programmers to change website content searchable on google
