The holiday shopping season can be a financial windfall for some retailers. It can also be open hunting season for those looking to profit off of consumer fraud.
Consumer advocacy groups, nationally and locally, say they regularly see a spike in consumer complaints during the holiday season, when people are buying big-ticket items like cars or purchasing gifts online for the first time.
"With the online purchases, sometimes the people don't do a little homework." said Marie Taylor, co-director of the Consumer Assistance Office of Metro West, a nonprofit organization associated with the State Attorney General's office.
