South African banks are adamant that their internet banking systems are secure. Despite these assurances from banks, people continue to lose their money. Newspaper reports say the list of people who lost their money through internet banking is just growing.
Earlier, Standard Bank confirmed that some money was taken from its clients when fraudsters hacked the bank's accounts.
A ‘phishing’ attack occurs when a hacker tries to get people's banking details electronically and then use the details to rob bank accounts.
Brett Hagart, a freelance journalist in IT Space, says internet bank users can fall victim to phishing even when using legitimate banking sites. Scam artists use spyware to intercept users’ bank details.
