WILLIMANTIC - Police are alerting residents to an Internet scam that cost one Willimantic resident and another out-of-state victim more than $1,000.
The Willimantic resident became involved with the perpetrator of the fraud in an Internet relationship that turned romantic, police said today. The perpetrator asked the resident to help collect money owed to the perpetrator by another person, police said. The resident complied, only to discover the scheme later.
Such scams often involve people from outside as well as within the United States, and they are very difficult to prosecute, police said. Residents are cautioned against investing in supposedly lucrative financial schemes on the Internet.
