Russia: computer crimes statistics

For the first time computer crimes appeared in Russia in 1991 when $ 125,5 thousand were stolen from USSR Vnesheconombank. All world learnt about Levin and the others' case. They committed a money theft from bank accounts using computer in the distance.

Russian Criminal Code has three articles for computer crimes: Article 272 - "Illegal access to computer information", Article 273 - "Creation, the use and distribution of the malicious codes", Article 274 - "Infringement with work of computers, systems and networks".

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, statistics on computer crimes is as follows: 7 computer crimes were filed, 6 proceedings under the Article 272 and 1 proceeding under the Article 273 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation were instituted in 1997. 66 computer crimes were filed, including 53 proceedings under the Article 272, 12 proceedings under the Article 273, 1 proceeding under the Article 274 were instituted in 1998. 294 crimes were filed, including 209 proceedings under the Article 272, 85 proceedings under the Article 273 were instigated in 1999. 800 computer crimes were filed, including 584 proceedings under the Article 272, 172 proceedings under the Article 273, 44 proceedings under the Article 274 were instituted in 2000.

1602 proceedings under the Article 272 and 165 "Causing property damage by fraud or abuse of trust" illegal access to telecommunication networks, orgniztion of long-distance call offices) of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation in 2003. These crimes made up 76% of total number of initiated cases on computer crimes.

According to the given statistics, number of computer crimes is a stable steadily increasing curve, the dynamics of increase makes up near 400% annually.
