Phishing or hacking?

Hackers have mounted an electronic attack against Fairfax's newly-acquired $700 million internet auction site, Trade Me.

Trade Me executives have posted a security warning to clients that emails are circulating, purporting to be from Trade Me, asking them to confirm their log-on details.

"It directs you to a site that looks like Trade Me and asks you to log in," Trade Me said.

"This is not from Trade Me.

" If you have already responded to the email please change your password immediately."

Internet observers said the emails appeared to be a "phishing" campaign, in which people received a false message saying: "We recently noticed one or more attempts to log in to your Trade Me account ... if you did not initiate the log ins, please visit Trade Me as soon as possible to check-up your account information"
