A newspaper investigation has revealed that thousands of Britons' credit card details are being sold online by identity thieves.
Conducted by the Times, the research found that at least 400 complete credit card identifications, including three-digit security numbers, are sold in internet chat rooms every day.
Other pieces of information that are available include e-mail and home addresses, phone numbers and mothers' maiden names.
Altogether, a complete set of data can fetch up to £100, if a valid Pin number is included.
The thieves were found to get their information from a number of sources, not just from people using the internet to buy goods, indicating that everyone could be at risk who has given credit card information to an organisation.
