Office of Fair Trading vs Internet scam

Date: October 15, 2007

The Office of Fair Trading is launching a campaign to prevent UK tourists falling victim to bogus holiday scams while visiting Mediterranean destinations.

The OFT’s Scambusters team, is linking with Trading Standards Officers, is warning holidaymakers flying to Spanish resorts of the dangers of scams which cost UK consumers more than £1bn every year.

The scam involves scratchcards, which are handed out to tourists by touts. Every card shows a winner but to collect their prize tourists must attend a lengthy presentation and are persuaded into signing a contract to join an ‘exclusive’ club promising five-star accommodation and unlimited holidays at reduced prices, which often turns out to offer little more than access to an Internet booking service.
