On March 18, German law enforcement held the largest operation against homeland hackers.
Several people were arrested and around 38 terabytes of pirated software and films seized following raids in Germany, according to a media release from the German Federation Against Copyright Theft (GVU).
Around 800 buildings were raided in Hamburg, Munich, Bochum, Frankfurt, Cologne and Bremen, the organization said. This followed an investigation which has been going on for more than two years.
The damage to the entertainment and software industries caused by the piracy was estimated to be in tens of millions of euros.
According to GVU, 19 servers which were used to host the pirated products were seized. Also seized were over 200 computers and 40,000 CDs.
A gang from the Ruhr district, which was supplying dealers with recent movies on video CDs and the latest software on DVDs, was broken up.
A group, Liquid-FXP-Board, was infiltrated and the administrator of the group gave access to law enforcement authorities, according to a report in Heise Online.
The data processing centres of two universities were among those searched, Heise reported.
