Phone banking scam under investigation

Date: August 22, 2007

A 1-800 phone number associated with a scammer trying to get credit card information from customers of Old Point National Bank has been shut down.

A message at the number now says "phone service on this number has been suspended." An automated call claiming to be Old Point National Bank Security had been calling random Peninsula residents - not just Old Point customers - and directing people to call 1-800-341-1438.

The Hampton-based bank is working with the FBI and local police departments to track the source of the calls, said Lani Chisman Davis, marketing director for Old Point. Some customers were tricked into giving up credit card information.
