The federal police are setting up a national unit to combat internet fraud. The unit will primarily address the large number of complaints of minor fraud that the courts are currently forced to throw out.
The new investigation unit will be housed at the Federal Computer Crime Unit (FCCU) of the federal police.
"There have been many cases of minor damages reported, like swindling cases involving a few hundred euros," says Luc Beirens, head of the FCCU. "Often the public prosecution department decides not to further investigate these minor cases, especially if the perpetrators are abroad."
