Internet reshipping scam

Date: September 28, 2007

A Pacific Grove woman told police Monday that someone she had met through an Internet dating service may have used her in an identity theft "reshipping" scam.

Police said the suspect carefully developed a relationship with the woman using an Internet-based dating service, then told her he was trying to rebuild an orphanage in Africa and needed to use her residential address to receive and reship recent online purchases.

Police discovered that the names on the packages were connected with identity thefts reported from across the United States.
